Our services

At Gentian we offer a range of services and processes, tailored to assessing biodiversity and green infrastructure on:

  • Landscape scale on urban, peri-urban and rural sites,

  • The built environment in cities and towns.

Landscape – Urban and Rural

Whilst there are considerable differences between rural and urban landscapes the basic principles of Gentian’s approach are the same.

Habitat assessment and monitoring

Working with several developers and landowners we have developed a process to remotely undertake:

  • Phase 1 ecological surveys – providing an ecological baseline

  • Biodiversity net gain (BNG) assessments

  • Monitoring of sites over time to measure improvements or not (particularly relevant in regards BNG)

  • Mapping of specific features – currently with specific reference to trees, private gardens in urban areas and invasive species

Urban / Built Environment

Gentian has several processes designed specifically for the built environment in urban areas.

Green Roof Assessment

This specific process provides a detail analysis of a given area, whether it be a Borough/Council/Municipality, a neighbourhood or a real estate company property portfolios.

Our analysis provides:

  • Number and total area of green roofs in the specified area/buildings

  • The number and total area of different types of green roofs (intensive, extensive, and biosolar)

  • A condition assessment in terms of biodiversity for extensive green roofs (currently)

Green roof retrofit potential

Whilst there are already tools to assess the number of flat roofs in a given area, Gentian goes to a deeper level. Our process identifies flat roofs that have meaningful potential for having green roofs installed on a roof with no structural uplift required. This relies on a sophisticated process that identifies the surface of the roof and whether that surface can be removed and replaced with a green roof of similar weight.

  • Number and total area of retrofittable roofs in the specified area/buildings

We have also developed a process to provide an assessment on whether biosolar green roofs are toted be potentially retrofit and the energy would be produced without compromising the biodiversity and other environmental benefits of the green roof, the solar panels would be installed on.
